This year, impress your guests with your finest cocktail-making skills. If you’re entertaining you’ve probably got a bottle of bourbon on hand and with these three simple cocktail recipes, your friends will be asking when you became a professional.

First things first, to bartend like a professional be sure to use quality liquor (it really makes a difference), fresh ingredients and most importantly, measure everything! It’s the little things that make the difference between a mediocre cocktail and a great one.

THE CLASSIC

Mint Julep
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves + 2 fresh mint sprigs
1 tablespoon sugar
3 ounces bourbon
crushed ice
In a mint julep cup or thick glass, muddle the mint leaves and sugar with 1 teaspoon water until the sugar is dissolved (1 minute). Pack the glass with crushed ice and top with bourbon. Serve garnished with mint sprigs.

THE MODERN

Bourbon Renewal

2 oz bourbon
1 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz creme de cassis
1/2 oz simple syrup
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake. Strain into double old fashioned glass with ice. Garnish with lemon wheel.

THE BUBBLY

Seelbach
1.5 oz Bourbon
1/2 oz Cointreau
6 dashes Aromatic Bitters
Brut Champagne, to fill glass
orange peel, to garnish
Mix bourbon, Cointreau, and bitters into a mixing glass with ice. Stir to chill. Strain into champagne glass or coupe. Fill with champagne, garnish with orange.
