Ridge Vineyards

LOCATION : Santa Cruz, California

WINEMAKERS : Eric Baugher, John Olney, David Gates

KNOWN FOR :  This iconic winery has been making Zinfandel based blends and the world famous Monte Bello Cabernet since the mid-1960s.

HISTORY : The history of Ridge actually begins in the late 1800s when Italian immigrants began planting grapes on Monte Bello Ridge, south of San Francisco.  Ridge Vineyards, as we know it, began in 1959 when 4 engineers from nearby Stanford purchased the property and began making wine commercially. Its notoriety took off in 1969 when Paul Draper was hired as winemaker.  In the decades since, Ridge has been known as one of the leaders in the California wine world. Its 1971 Monte Bello Cabernet finished fifth in the famous “Judgement of Paris” tasting in 1976.  Paul Draper retired as winemaker in 2016, leaving behind a 47-year legacy unparalleled in the world of American winemaking.
